The Autobiography of a Sex Worker

Sometimes you read a book and you like it. You find a lot of loopholes in it but that just does not matter. The Autobiography of a sex worker was similar to that actually.

Nalini Jameela- the name is a bit confusing and her journey is full of ups and downs. It is her story which is writtes in a very straight forward way. Unfortunately, people in India have a tendency to look down upon the story of sex workers. Result of poverty, abusive husbands and few other things are closely related to this issue. Most of the literate people denies to think of the sex workers as "human-being".

The auto biography of a sex worker is a sensational book in Malayalam. Later it was translated in English. The journey of the leading lady is unapologetic, her body language and her story telling never asks for any sympathy from the reader. It is the unapologetic narrative that caught my fancy. In Indian literature it is the first time I found such bold narrative.

The main storyline might seem a bit boring. Well, It is actually boring. But the perspective of the woman, her craving from life and how she always wanted little more than life was giving her is scintillating at times. She shone brightly through this book. She became a social worker but she never feared to write down her not so bright past. It was a brave effort, and definitely a good book.
