Some books are meant to be brilliant and 'A clockwork Orange' by Anthony Burgess is one such book. I am one of those many, who saw the movie first, and 6-7 years ago when I watched Stanley Kubrick's version of A clockwork orange, it made me sick to the core. I am not someone who feels sick that easily but this movie successfully did so.
Hence, after so many years, I finally mastered my courage to give the book a shot. Firstly, the book is written in a "out-of the-syllabus" kind of vocabulary but they are understandable, even though sometimes I was getting bit distracted. This book talks about the sociopath Alex and his 'droogs' (gangmates) and his journey toward madness and correction.
However, the question remains, can everything be cured? May be, not.
I developed a certain disgust toward Alex, while reading the book. He is a sadistic rapist teenager who thinks he knows more about everything than everyone else around. He is trendy and ultra-violent and we have all usually come across such people once or twice in our life. What he does in the first part of the book, what happens to him inside the correction center, and who he becomes after coming out- that is what we see in this book, through Alex's own word.
It is a brilliant book and must read. But beware, it is graphic, violent and disturbing. Did I enjoy reading the book? No, I couldn't. It was a difficult read for me.
I haven't read the book ... have seen the movie though. Such a thought-provoking book ... Communism has failed, the world over. And this book clearly shows not everything can be cured. The mind is not easy to condition or calibrate.
