Book Review: Origin - Dan Brown
For the last 5years I have been waiting more than eagerly for Dan Brown's Origin, because I didn't enjoy reading his last two books, The lost symbol and Inferno at all.
He had addressed a great issue in Inferno but it was a tedious read for me. I really thought that in Origin, where he's dealing with AI, it would be a different side of him, as an author, we would be able to see.
Was it a fun read? Well, till page 200-220 I wasn't exactly sure where the story was going but I've somehow figured it out in my mind (that's not a good sign for any thriller). I loved Professor Langdon in The da Vinci code and in Angels of demons. I even loved him in The lost symbol. However, in Origin, he behaves in a naive way which is extremely annoying at times. I am.now feeling that Dan Brown should give the character of Professor Langdon some break.
Edmond Kirsch is a futurist and and his technologies are in direct war against "dark religions". We are living in a world where religious dogmatism is a huge issue, kudos to Mr. Brown for writing about it and against it. Full points for that.
However, some of the characters are half baked and at times some things felt really forced. Was he trying to make the LGBTQ community happy? I don't know but it definitely felt so. Because that reference didn't occur smoothly in the book and felt unnecessary. In many places the book was extremely and unnecessarily preachy. I expect better from Dan Brown.
The descriptions are spot on and you could see those places while reading the book. However, AI is a thing that could have been handled better.
This book needs editing! It is at least 30 pages longer than it should be.
My rating- 3/5
