Some names give away a lot while some names are confusing. 'When the Devil whispers" partially belong to the second category as I started reading it thinking it as a "horror" novel. However, it is not but the initial build-up was really creepy and nice. It starts with the disappearance of a character Shalini and afterward what happens and WHY.
The plot unfolded a bit unevenly, which is okay, considering it is a thriller. Some of the gruesome scenes are demonstrated really well. However, there were a few times, too many things were happening, and instead of making progress with the plot, it was becoming little too confusing. May be, that was the intention, if that's the case, I am not sure, why.
We get to see some backgrounds of the characters, but the story needed little more depth. In the end, a lot of things remained unexplained. A lot of Whys remained in my mind that I couldn't find any answer of.
The plot was fast-paced and interesting. It tried to divert the reader's attention to other things really hard and those tries seemed honest. However, at times, it was little too 'Bollywood-y" if I may say so.
It is a debut novel and I really like the concept overall. If you are on a journey and looking for a fast read, you can take this book. However, there was an obvious problem for me, which I couldn't really overlook even after trying and that is- the choice of words. It was too simple. I have no problem with 'Indianized' use of English but the difference between a blog post, an average book and a great book is often the choice of words and there I found this one lacking.
Having said that, do give it a try. It is not a bad read.
My Rating- 2.5/5
